This southern Ontario town has a history that goes back well before European settlers arrived on the scene. Brantford occupies the place where the Attawandaron, or Neutral Nation, once had their main village. After the Neutral Nation was decimated by the Iroquois, Loyalist settlers from the Thirteen Colonies, like Captain Joseph Brant, moved in and laid the stones for what is now modern day Brantford. As a reward for his loyalty to the British Crown, Brant was given a large land grant on the Grand River. The town’s name comes from the name of the area, “Brant’s ford,” which itself comes from Brant’s crossing of the river. Brantford’s most celebrated former resident is Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the metal detector and, of course, telephone communications. Bell was also credited with breakthroughs in aeronautics and hydrofoils.
